On January 6, 2025, 36-year-old Kach Medina Umandap, a Filipino World Travelers (FWT) Ambassador, achieved an extraordinary milestone by reaching Sudan, her final United Nations member country. This accomplishment makes her the youngest and the first Filipino to visit all 193 UN countries using solely a Philippine passport. Remarkably, she is also likely the first woman from a developing nation with a low passport index to complete this significant achievement.
Kach’s journey to Sudan began in June 2024 when she started her application for an entry document. After months of anticipation, she received approval on December 3, 2024. Due to the recent conflict in the region, entering Sudan posed significant challenges, with heightened restrictions and safety concerns making it one of the most difficult countries to visit. To ensure a safe and seamless trip, she confirmed that other foreigners had successfully visited and exited the country as tourists via Port Sudan. With Ethiopian Airlines operating flights to the city since October 2024, she finalized her travel plans with confidence.
Upon her arrival in Port Sudan, Kach explored key attractions in the city, including the Naval Museum, the bustling market, and the scenic Corniche.
Guided by a local expert, she immersed herself in the vibrant culture and history of the region, capturing memories that reflected Sudan’s unique charm.
Kach stayed safely at the Grand Hotel Elsahil in Port Sudan. She heard from locals that life seemed to be settling back to normal and observed a sense of calm in the city. Yet, her heart remains heavy knowing the immense challenges Sudan continues to face due to the ongoing civil war. Leaving with a deeper admiration for the country's beauty and resilience, she cannot ignore the remarkable courage and strength of its people in the face of such adversity.
As an FWT Ambassador, Kach motivates others to venture beyond their comfort zones, encouraging them to not only discover the beauty of the world but also to connect deeply, empathize, and stand in solidarity with the stories and challenges of its people.
Her journey to Sudan highlights the profound value of cultural exchange and inspires Filipinos to dream beyond boundaries. While celebrating this personal milestone, Kach hopes to shed light on Sudan's struggles, encouraging others to remember the families impacted, support humanitarian initiatives, and pray for lasting peace in this beautiful country.
